It is one of the most delicate cultivation aspects of this type of plant. Knowing how to water succulents correctly is no small task. In reality, we can consider that it is the most important task of its cultivation since it is, in reality, the only one that can compromise its well-being. Understanding it goes through remembering an important aspect of all these plants. The fleshy appearance of their leaves or stems is nothing more than a visible sign that they are authentic water reserves. Due to their origins, they are plants used to drought. And, for the same reason, they have developed a natural mechanism for storing water in order to survive.

In general, we are talking about extremely rustic and resistant plants. Not only do they not usually have pest attacks but, in addition, their cultivation does not involve any difficulty. There is only one exception: when it comes to irrigation. One aspect, is excess, which is usually the main cause of death of these plants. So for that alone, it's well worth taking the time to learn how to water succulents.

Succulents, especially young plants, have shallow roots. These, in contact with water, tend to absorb the maximum amount possible. A logical behaviour, since they come from desert areas. However, this water-holding capacity is a double-edged sword. If they are exposed to too much water, their absorption mechanism will try to store it anyway. And the excess of excess water will only rot its roots.

There is a tendency to grow succulents in pots or containers without drainage. Something that, despite the fact that it can work on a decorative level, can have a negative impact on the well-being of these plants. Having them in this type of container is possible, without a doubt. But doing it involves several things, and extra work. On the one hand, create a good bottom layer with marble or a light and decorative aggregate that helps keep excess irrigation water away from the roots. On the other hand, always water with caution.

If you think that spraying is the correct way to water succulents you are wrong. It is not useful for moistening leaves and stems, much less for soaking the substrate. The best way to water succulents is with a watering can or, failing that, with a hose that has the option of simulating rainwater.

The only use that we will make of a sprayer will be with succulents that we are propagating. Some plant projects that we can even spray every day.

Another common question, which has a simple answer: when the substrate is completely dry. And we insist: completely dry. You have to understand that this drought is positive for these plants. Only during it, the succulents begin to form new and large roots. What is the reason? That, when water is available again, the plant can absorb more.

Since the drought of the substrate depends on many things, there is no exact irrigation pattern. But, for guidance, the usual is one watering a week in summer and one every three in the months without heat.
