How Often Do You Water Succulents Without Drainage Holes?

Succulent plants do not need a lot of water but when they are watered it is important that the excess water can come out of the pot somewhere. Even so, compositions in containers without holes are very fashionable, such as pot covers, glass containers, birdbaths, basins, etc. Finding out how often we have to water our succulents is already a somewhat complicated task when the pot drains perfectly, especially if the container does not have a hole, since these types of plants need the substrate to dry quickly.

A perfectly draining substrate is ideal in any circumstance, but it is extremely important when the pot does not have holes, as it provides a greater flow of air to the roots of the plant. Although water has nowhere to flow, it is easier for it to evaporate if the soil is porous and aerated. The best thing in these cases is that the substrate is partly composed of large particles, such as gravel between 4 and 6 cm.

HOW MUCH WATER TO USE WITH EACH IRRIGATION

Both the amount of water you use and the frequency of irrigation influence the succulents to develop healthily. The frequency of irrigation is independent of the type of container where the plants are, whether or not it has a hole for the water outlet: succulents should only be watered again when the substrate has completely dried.

The objective is to get the entire substrate wet, which we will have allowed to dry completely before watering again. To begin with, it is recommended to use a measure of water equivalent to half the volume of the container where the plants are. If the container has about a glass of soil, start by pouring in half a glass of water.

In principle that's fine. Now it is time to observe the plants to see how they evolve with that amount of water and be attentive to the symptoms in case there are any problems. The time that the substrate is going to be humid depends on various factors: its composition, temperature, insulation, ventilation, etc. If the container is on a very sunny terrace, it will probably require watering every two or three days, if it is in the shade it may only need a weekly one, if the substrate is permeable it will dry sooner than if it is compact, etc.

Use this method as a starting point and adjust the amount as necessary based on the signals your plants give during the following weeks.

One of the biggest problems of a pot without drainage is knowing how much water has been spilled, we can only check this in glass or transparent plastic pots, since it allows you to visually check how wet the earth is.

When watering it is best to use a glass or cup, even a spoon if the pot is very small. Watering with a large watering can or putting the container under the tap is the worst option.
