How Much Water Does A Plant Need Per Day?

PLANT WATERING DEPENDS ON A LOT OF FACTORS

One of the most common causes of plant death is overwatering. Gardeners inadvertently send their plants, shrubs, trees and bulbs to early watery graves due to over-care and in this case, over-watering.

BUT SHOULD YOU WATER EVERYDAY?

For most plants, daily watering will do more harm than good. Unless you are growing rainforest plants that are used to daily downpours, you need to let your plants and shrubs time to breathe between watering.

There are a lot of factors that play a part in determining a watering schedule. Soil type, plant type, weather conditions, indoor plants versus outdoor plants, plant seedlings versus full-grown mature potted variants to name but a few.

Knowing your plants is the first step to knowing how much water they will need.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO MOTHER NATURE

Always check rainfall levels before watering anything in your garden. Keep an eye on how much moisture is being received by the weather on a daily basis. Either use a water gauge or download an app from the iOS or Android app stores to help you keep a daily track.

OUTDOOR PLANTS

Outdoor plants need to be watered every 3 to 7 days or when the soil is dry. When checking the soil, stick your finger down below the surface - a dry top doesn't always reflect the true nature of the soil beneath.

INDOOR PLANTS

Knowing when to water indoor plants is a lot more difficult. There are thousands of types of plants - each with their own specific variables and preferences.

However, the general rule is to monitor the plants behaviour. Watch for yellowing, wilting and leaf shedding.

POTTED PLANTS

Potted plants generally store less moisture because of lack of space. However, be very careful of pots that do not have drainage holes in the bottom. These pots must be monitored diligently as they have a tendency to store excess water in the bottom. Keep an eye on your potted plants and water as and when they need it.

CLIMATE

Where you live plays an important part in determining how often you should water your plants.

If you live in a climate that is cold and experiences frequent rain, the recommendation is to water your plants every two or three weeks.

If you live in a climate that's sunny, dry and hot you will need to water your plants more frequently - potentially every week.

INDOOR TEMPERATURE

If a room is too warm your plants will dry out. Conversely, a cold room can also have a major impact on a plants watering schedule. Keep a close eye on the temperature of the room to ensure your plants stay healthy.
